Best Metal Concert I've ever been to: The second day of the Saints and Sinners Festival in 2006, at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. I was up in the front against the barricade for the sets of Job for a Cowboy, Through the Eyes of the Dead, A Life Once Lost, God Forbid, All That Remains, Unearth, and Killswitch Engage. Doc Coyle of God Forbid handed me his pick after their set ended. Bob Meadows of A Life Once Lost climbed out into the crowd and was standing on top of me while singing "Vulture". Trevor Phipps of Unearth climbed out into the crowd and stuck the microphone in my face so I could sing part of "The Great Dividers". And Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage climbed out into the crowd and basically stood on my shoulders and conducted the crowd as we sang "Rose of Sharyn" for him. It was an experience that could never be duplicated or surpassed.

Best Metal Concert I've never been to: Sounds of the Underground 2007 at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. Headlined by Gwar, Shadows Fall, Chimaira, Every Time I Die, Darkest Hour, and many others, with special guests Testament and All That Remains. It was a day of incredible music. I would have killed to see that show.

A few of my favorite bands: Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Demon Hunter, All That Remains, Unearth, Soilwork, Iron Maiden, Sevendust, Shadows Fall, Disarmonia Mundi, Chimaira, Haste the Day, Megadeth, Lamb of God, Mnemic, 3 Inches of Blood, As I Lay Dying, Scar Symmetry, In This Moment, Nonpoint, Metallica, Seemless, Dark Tranquillity, God Forbid, and A Life Once Lost, to name a few.

What Metal means to me in 20 words or less: Say what you want, as loud as you can, no matter what anyone says or thinks about you.

About Me: I'm 22 years old, a native of Rhode Island. I'm a senior communications major at Seton Hall University. I DJ at 89.5 WSOU under the name Chris the Mad Scientist. I love music and could not live without it. I was introduced to metal by my best friend at school, who gave me a copy of Master of Puppets to listen to. I've never looked back since. I go against the grain as much as possible in life, and I firmly believe that originality and self-expression are the most important qualities to have in this world of imitation and stagnation.

Best metal concert I've ever been to: I've seen so many great shows, it's hard to say. Some that stand out are Savatage in the Hall of the Mountain King years, Sanctuary on the Into the Mirror Black tour, Manowar on the Fighting the World tour, Vicious Rumors on the Welcome to the Ball tour, King's X at Roseland for Faith, Hope, Love and their self-titled, and my first times seeing Trouble, Nevermore, Opeth and In Flames live on stage. I'll also never forget seeing Metallica walk out onto a dark, smoky stage of tombstone crosses on the MASTER OF PUPPETS tour warming up for Ozzy. I was terrified!

Best metal concert I've never been to: Two shows from the late Eighties still stick in my mind. The first was the "Hell on Wheels" tour with Armored Saint, Helloween and Grim Reaper. Can't believe I missed that one. And then there was Stryper and Loudness at Madison Square Garden. The city still seemed real big to me at the time.

A few of my favorite bands: Opeth, Spiral Architect, Nevermore, Evergrey, At the Gates/The Haunted, Carcass/Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil and a zillion others.

What metal means to me in 15 words or less: We burn because the world should be so much more beautiful than it is.

About me: Ladd Everitt was born in 1970 and, as the accompanying photos show, is aging rapidly. He compensates for his fear of dying and becoming irrelevant by launching himself into mosh pits at great physical risk and by trying to be as "heavy" as possible. He was introduced to metal at the age of eleven or twelve by a troubled teenager who lived next door who was kind enough to blast "Iron Man" on a small radio in his driveway. He has never looked back. Unlike fellow ex-reviewer Craig "The King" McCullough, he denies reality and refuses to shave his widow's peak clean off his head.

Best Concert I've ever been to: I have no idea. I go to more concerts in a month than most people go to in a year. I have been so many great shows its ridiculous. Tori Amos and Ben Folds blew my mind... Fates Warning/Savatage dual bill was incredible, I love concerts!

Best Concert I've never been to: Fates Warning on the A Pleasant Shade of Gray tour...sigh.

A few of my Favorite Bands: Beloved(us), Fates Warning, Jars of Clay, Pain of Salvation, Emery, Atmosphere

What music means to me in 10 words or less: everything

About me: "I am a Golden God" (quote Robert Plant) I'm pretty sure I'd be around if I didn't have music in my life but I sure as hell wouldn't be the person you're reading about right now. I'm into every style of music out there right now. It's tough to pick a spot for me as I try to dive headlong into whatever is popular and disect it. Name a style of music and I bet I own a CD from that genre and if I don't, I'd love to give it a shot! Music is my life and my life is music... I'm in a band (isn't everyone) I own a ton of CDs and I can't go more than a few days without buying one. I have a problem that I refuse to find a cure for. I am a Philly music lover--I'm into all scene's and support all forms.

Jacob Rosenberg

Best Metal Concert I've ever been to: The first time I saw Dream Theater. It was right before Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence came out and they were testing the new material out live. They played for about 3 hours. The show was at BB Kings so it was a really intimate setting. Also the Iced Earth show in 2002 with In Flames kicked ass. Tool is another band that puts on a kick ass show. It is hard to pick an absolute favorite I have seen so many awesome shows in the past few years.Best Metal Concert I've never been to: A Pain of Salvation headling tour and a Pink Floyd tour with Roger Waters.

A few of my Favorite Bands: Devil Doll, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Meshuggah, Pink Floyd, Nevermore, Death, Zero Hour, Opeth, the list goes on and on.

What Metal means to me in 10 words or less: My life.

About me: I am currently a sophmore at Penn State University. I love everything about music and metal. I can't wait to learn more about the genre and discover great music I never knew existed.

Dave Smith

Best Metal Concert I've ever been to: The first time seeing Metallica (1988); seeing Dio in 2000 (he performed excellently for over 2 hours, pretty amazing for a guy who's about 90 years old); In Flames on their first U.S tour in 1999. My first concert will always be a highlight: AC/DC in 1988. Oh yeah, and seeing Queensryche when they played the whole OPERATION: MINDCRIME album. That almost makes up for the really boring Geoff Tate solo show I saw last year.

Best Metal Concert I've never been to: I'd love to see one of those big European festival shows, it looks like they’d destroy the shoddy U.S. metalfests. I regret never seeing Faith No More or Death when it was still possible.

A few of my Favorite Bands: Black Sabbath until 1982, Metallica until 1996, Iron Maiden, Faith No More, Danzig, Katatonia, Opeth, My Dying Bride, Voivod, AC/DC, Rush and at least 100 others.

What Metal means to me in 10 words or less: My life-support system and a nice substitute for therapy.

About me: I'm old enough to remember when Metallica and Megadeth weren't sell-outs, and when people thought Winger and mullets were cool. I work in the very unmetal field of accounting, but it does provide me with the means to support my terrible CD-buying addiction. I once sang in a band that was banned from every place we ever played. I can't really sing, but hey, that never stopped Quorthon or Ozzy. When I'm not talking to the voices in my head, I enjoy air guitaring (and occasionally actually playing the real thing) and caring for my family, which consists of one large cat.

Jim Tasikas

Best metal concert I've ever been to: Fates Warning at Evening Star Motel in Niagara Falls, NY. It was very small and intimate. Those kinds of concerts are usually my favorite. A recent one was Nevermore, Into Eternity, and Opeth. Three really talented bands on one stage. It was a authentic progressive technical metal concert. And finally, Cynic with Cannibal Corpse was the most entertaining.

A few of my favorite bands: Spiral Architect, Nevermore, Fates Warning, Cynic, At the Gates(first two albums only), Gorguts(Negativa), Death(Control Denied), Into Eternity, Twisted Into Form, Watchtower, Delirium Endeavor (of course), Necrophagist, Quo Vadis, Gojira, Morbid Angel, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Dio, and hundreds of others.

What metal means to me in 15 words or less: "Fuck 'em, thats why."

About me: Jim Tasikas, born Dimitrios Stylianos Tasikas, was introduced to Iron Maiden by his older cousin at the age of 11 and has fallen in love with metal ever since.

Best Metal Concert I've ever been to: This would have to be a few years ago when Nevermore was touring in support of Dreaming Neon Black. They came to New York City with Arch Enemy in support and October Thorns opening. First off, October Thorns were the best band on the planet and they were in top form this night. The energy level was higher than ever and singer Paul LaPlaca was simply maniacal. Arch Enemy put on a good show but Nevermore was phenomenal. Warrel Dane spent most of the show hovering above the crowd and stage diving nonstop, even shoving the microphone into obvious die hards' faces. I don't know what prompted Warrel's insanity but needless to say I have never been entertained better than this. A close second would be Living Colour in New Jersey last year and the Clash of the Titans tour which included Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, and a young Alice In Chains or Soundscape at the Big Bang Festival in Connecticut.

Best Metal Concert I've never been to: Obviously this deals with expectations, therefore I must say the Lollapalooza tour in 1992 which included Ministry, Soundgarden, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers... or maybe when Soundgarden, Voivod, and Danzig hooked up in the late eighties... Actually, here it is, I was there but the show was cancelled about thirty seconds into the first song--Strapping Young Lad, Stuck Mojo and Testament in New Jersey at Obsessions.

A few of my Favorite Bands: October Thorns, Soundscape, Anthrax, Holy Mother, Evergrey, Strapping Young Lad, Anathema, Into Eternity, Kings X, Paradise Lost, Last Crack, I Mother Earth, Fates Warning, Overkill, Testament, Death Angel, Single Bullet Theory, to name but a precious few.

What Metal means to me in 10 words or less: Life

About me: I am 32 years old and work in the New York City public school system as a high school English/Film teacher. First discovered metal when I was in high school and realized how cool bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Metallica were. Started the print version of Transcending the Mundane about five years ago and still going strong. I'm also a huge movie fan, and make sure to see at least one a week. My life is dedicated to music.
