Galactic Cowboys -
Machine Fish |
Machine Fish is the third release from this Houston-based band that mixes humor with serious and driven metal to produce music that is, well. . .original and unique. The wonder of the Galactic Cowboys has always been their ability to layer lush, crystal harmonies over crunching and ferocious riffs and this talent is once again displayed on Machine Fish.
This album was almost not made, as the band broke up briefly after touring for 1993's Space in Your Face, parting ways permanently with producer Sam Taylor and guitarist Dane Sonnier. Ex- GC roadie Wally Farkas has now assumed the guitar duties and drummer Alan Doss produced the latest disk. The result of these changes is an album that is more grungy and alternative in sound, with less of the experimentation and complexity that was found on earlier GC albums. Bassist Monte Colvin assures that the power of the music is as palpable as ever though, with his endless intensity and merciless playing. And lead vocalist Ben Huggins once again turns in a virtuoso performance with his off-kilter and unorthodox ragings. The vocal harmonies provided by the four members of the band (who all sing) are as sharp and creative as ever.
What do the Galactic Cowboys sing about? How about psychic hot-lines (“Psychotic Companion”), college depression (“In a Lonely Room”), and fire and brimstone prophecies that fail to come true (“9th of June”)? Throw in rage, helplessness, joviality, and introspection and you've just about run the gamut of GC emotions. The band keeps the music churning throughout, with a ceaseless attack that would make even Mother Theresa bang her head.
And if you believe that, I've got a ranch on Mars to sell you.

| - Their best album. "Red Sun" rocks! - I hate to dis this brilliant band, but this is probably their worst to date. Very disappointing. - One of the most underrated bands ever! I wish they were still around!! |
