Interview with guitarist and keyboardist Dory Baror
Israel metal band Eternal Gray have made people take notice with their technical, yet methodical death metal style. Their debut Kindless, reveals a band with exceptional musical ability, albeit with weak one dimensional vocals. Kindless was released through Raven Music but is distributed here in the States
via The End Records. Here are some interview questions which guitarist/ keyboardist Dory Baror answered.
Do you think Kindless accurately represents what Eternal Gray is all about?
Yes, of course Kindless is right to that part of our life. We recorded it a year and a half ago. Currently we are working on the upcoming album, which keep's the Gray feeling as in Kindless, plus some new elements in the songs structure. It's a surprise.
How is life for a metal band in Isreal?
Tell you the truth, if you hear the stories on some very familiar band members that paint houses or selling paints door to door for living, so I guess Israel is not as hard as almost everybody thinks.
Do you live in fear of terrorist attacks?
The biggest fear is to get used to it and the internalization of that
crazy situation is not good, to none of the sides. Me, myself took part in one, but as the statistic shows, I'm not alone.
Why do you think terrorist groups often target Isreali's?
I think it's because they're not able to deal with people who think
different in another way. Bottom line, I see it as an animal like behavior, which we Israeli's choose not being like it.
What did Schmier and Peter Tagtgren add to Kindless? Do you feel their appearances help validate Eternal Gray as a professional band?
On top of all, this experience gave Eternal Gray the chance to see great persons in the metal scene doing their best for an unknown band from Israel, a good example for how to be a rock star, and still be supportive. They are professional and I'm sure they made their best for us.
Explain your unique approach to songwriting. The pace of most tracks tends to be slower to mid but also very technical.
We like to combine color range parts of metal. Each of us have it's own history in the metal field as well as other musical experiences, so I guess that's the reason of what we play. We rather think of our songs as songs, not as parts.
Your vocals are in the death metal style with little variety, do you feel this vocal style works well with the music, which is much more dynamic?
I think that that what makes it special. Of course we could do it in the conventional way. We like it that way, it makes the music more extreme than it should be with other style of vocals.
Did you feel your work with Betrayer was special, or is the highlight actually being able to form Eternal Gray as a result of that band's demise?
My time in Betrayer was special and I got the chance to meet and work with great people. We came to a conclusion that each of us wants and seek something else, so I formed Eternal Gray as the place that I could express myself as I want. My highlight is Eternal Gray of course.
Do you think there will ever be peace in this world we live in?
Not as long people live in it.
What does it take to live in a more peaceful society?
It takes patience, understanding and exception of the fact that we are different from each other. Of course money is also a big issue.
How was your experience in Sweden while recording Kindless? Do you think you would use the Abyss Studio again?
It was really good, the place is quiet and by that letting you concentrate in whatever you want. Tommy is a professional and a very courteous man, great to work with him. As using the Abyss again, I know that the new songs that we are currently working on are different than Kindless. The atmosphere is different, so is the sound we seek. Although the sound of Kindless is not the typical Abyss, we seek something different.
Describe how Tommy approaches producing as opposed to his brother's style?
I never got the chance to work with Peter, so I have no basis to compare. The only basis is what I've heard from Peter's studio, and the approach is really professional, as well as Tomy's.
