Talking with . . .   Freya

Interviewed 5/7/2003 by Brett VanPut

Freya Freya is a new band formed from the ashes of the acclaimed Earth Crisis. Earth Crisis became legends with several releases, including a short stint on Roadrunner, in the 90's based in the hardcore straight edge scene. They signed with Victory Records and their final release together, Slither, saw the band go into a more modern direction which included vocalist Karl Buechner using multi toned vocals and a nu metal musical direction. Earth Crisis broke up and Karl formed Freya with former bandmates guitarist Erick Edwards and bassist Bulldog. Here is a brief interview in which several questions were ignored and when answered extensive spelling and grammtical errors had to be corrected.

What differences would Earth Crisis fans find in Freya?
I'm not sure maybe an Earth Crisis fan would wear a headband and a Freya fan wouldn't (joking). Actually most Freya fans seem to be old Earth Crisis fans so there isn't much of a difference at all.

Do you feel it was necessary to end Earth Crisis to go with the new path of Freya?
I actually would have liked to be able to do both, but that wasn't in the cards so Freya was started because Karl and I still want to do music.

Do you feel Earth Crisis had to deal with the pressure of certain expectations that would not be found in a new band like Freya?
Yes, definitely there was a lot of pressure for Earth Crisis, but when we started Freya the pressure was off. We could sound like whatever we wanted to. We could have been a polka band if we wanted and nobody could say anything, cuase it's a different band.

What is it like working with Darian and Corey? What do they add to Freya?
They definitely add their own pieces to the band. Corey, the drummer adds a lot of energy, and as far as Darrien goes, he's very good at coming up with melodic vocal lines for the choruses.

What are your tour plans?
We plan on touring the States this summer followed by a European tour and hopefully getting a good opening tour this fall.

Have you ever felt worn down or too overwhelmed by anything in your musical career so far? If so, what?
Of course. Being a musician can be the most draining thing ever. There's no guarantee, you can put everything you have into it. Write the best songs ever, and tour so long your own mother won't recognize you and still the band may not give back. You just have to make the best of it and keep going. Sometimes people want to be rewarded for their hard work.

Do you feel any pressure to make your sound more accessible or your lyrics less controversial so that Freya can have a chance to break through to the mainstream?
Honestly we're just writing stuff that sounds cool to us and whatever it sounds like when were writing is the way it's going to sound.

What is your definition of success?
Getting up in the morning is successful enough for me. Well it can be anything, helping other people, egging someones house (joking eggs aren't vegan) depends on my mood I guess.

"Seize the Day" is a very inspirational song, from your perspective, how are you able to accomplish so much in so little time? How do you seize the day?
You just have to set a goal every single day and accomplish it. My day won't end untill I accomplish what I set out to do that day.
